The tissue of social relations in Brazil and economic complexity

I often miss meeting people with an inner world. They are out there, but even as you get through them it’s usually hard to dive into their inner world.  There’s some magic to happen when this kind of people can put the whole world into their inner world, artists are great at doing that. But most of the time people like that just end up trying to fit in some fucked up reality. Brazil itself has a structure where peoples personality is usually built through other eyes, money is made through social relations, and there’s a lack of thinking in Brazilian economic structure. If someone gets rich, it probably was through some kind of “buy and sell” stuff. So social relations usually don’t tend to move towards economic complexity, with the building of ideas and thinking as a product.

Kind of interesting, how I get the feeling that the main problem in Brazil is in the tissue of social relations, where most of the human relations are meaningless, guided only by social animal instincts. If there ain’t complexity, thought building on the human relations itself, it seems out of touch with reality to expect that some economic complexity will grow out of nowhere.

I’m far from being a eugenics (which is a discussion that has been growing again, around CRISPR tech) guy, but the reality is that there’s not much, so if people don’t create anything, there will never be anything. Not saying that we will end up going back into the caves, but if human relations are not guided towards the building of collective thinking things won’t go anywhere.

And lately, I get to be fascinated, but how the main difficulty on organizations is precisely on the matter of doing things in a group. Someone can always do the whole planning alone, and on simple commercial activities that is usually the case, but the building of complex thought in-group/companies that would be the base for economic complexity seems somewhat harder.

Brazil faces a lack of asabiyyah/social cohesion (on the Ibn Khaldun concept).

Those are just some initial thoughts, but maybe there are some insights from Yuval Noah Harari that could be applied to the building of economic complexity. The whole Peugeot thing being one of the most interesting ones.

Sharing some tips in google for academics

Some may even say that be in the academy in those days, is kinda easy, since Sergey and Larry, already took a look in those questions, some time ago in the 90`s. By the way, take a look in some of their`s publications:

Sergey
https://research.google.com/pubs/SergeyBrin.html , or
http://infolab.stanford.edu/~sergey/

Larry
https://research.google.com/pubs/LawrencePage.html , or
http://dblp.org/pers/hd/p/Page:Larry

In the Brazilian society, where academy usually is proud of being isolated from the real questions in society, wherever they may be: business, social inequality (looking for situations inside our main cities)... is by some perspective easy to forget that that companies like Google, Monsato,Syngenta are heavily dependent on academic research.
So, lets take a look in tips for academic reseach.
First and most important, look for who knows what is doing.
How?Well it will depend, what do you want to understand?

Basic content

For introductory content the best will always be search for the syllabus in the best universities (by the best, is kinda obvious that we are talking about ivy leagues plus a very small group of universities). Look for the textbook used in those courses usually will help us saving a precious time, from trying to understand confused ideas by authors, that may know the content  but fail in organize its own ideas. A good example of author that fit very, in the concept of well organizers of its own ideas are the following:

-Olivier Blanchard
-Gilbert Strang
-Richard Feynman

Papers

With that said we are finally able to talk about a second level, when we talk about how to use google, for academic purposes. As immediate consequence of the first rule, the point is find some publications of authors that you admire, the kind of people that is able to show you a small detail in the world, that will sound so obvious after you got guided, you may end up asking yourself how did you not had that insight before.
Usually it will be a simple idea, but very well developed.

Business

Search for business content is kinda simple is just a question of know who is the best in some area, and use that information to your own  advantage when  you google it. Take a look
“interest fiel+ some consulting company+ .pdf/.ppt”
Some key names to wear in your research
Bain and Company
Mckynsey
BCG
BTG Pactual
Credit Suisse
BlackRock
Deutsche Bank

And some last tips:
Don’t to forget to use  https://www.quora.com/ There always interesting people available to help.
And, if you found this article you probably already knows, but if you don’t https://sci-hub.cc/

Why Buffet got back to Nebraska?

"In some places it's easy to lose perspective. But I think it's very easy to keep perspective in a place like Omaha," he said.
Buffett said being far from Wall Street actually helped him.
"It's very easy to think clearly here. You're undisturbed by irrelevant factors and the noise generally of business investments," Buffett said. "If you can't think clearly in Omaha, you're not going to think clearly anyplace."

Looking to the rich neighbourhoods in Brazil, and putting everything else in the same framework, it makes sense.

Money as a social-proxy

How would people make social transitions, if we would live in a system without money? The idea of social transitions and inequality is pretty much associated with our capitalist system, but in fact, inequality would exist even if we would live in some kind of social-anarchy society. In fact, today, if we consider a system without distortions created by the government choosing winners, wealth accumulation is pretty much an accumulation of social capital, since someone will only accumulate money if he offer`s something that society considers to have some value. In fact, value by itself is a social construction, which gets`s clear if think about why golden is such an important metal in our society, even if we have other metal`s that as much rare, as gold is.  I would even allow myself to think in the simple facts, gold is beautiful and it`s hard to get, if someone wants to have something that is nice and beautiful this will have a small value in the first exchange involving a golden bar, this value will grow when the golden go through new hands, until the moment someone like a king gets interested in the bar, a since someone like king has already too much, he will be able to pay much, when he gets interested in something. If we consider in what happened in Spain when the country accumulated to much gold, this idea makes some sense.
We could argue about ˜why gold?˜, since if we ignore it`s chemical properties, it`s pretty much useless, but since the gold value it`s purely social at some point, people never get satiated as they would be with something that is useful.
Getting back to accumulation question, I would suggest that in a scenario without distortions we could in money as a social proxy.
Well, I ended-up by forgetting the social transition question, but it in a non-capitalist-extreme scenario has happened through the army, in old times, or even through the fame in our days.
I will be back to that theme in some moment.

The borderline betwen hands-on and formal knowledge

Usually, we can see peoples trying to establish a border line between hands-on knowledge, and formal knowledge. This is an honest mistake since people forgot, that formal knowledge is just a result of the process in which knowledge has been accumulated in previous hands-on experiences. Someone may talk about business, as an example of an activity where the learn-by-doing is kind of a rule, but even in business the poles of excellence (I assume that strategy consulting companies are a good example at here), are built under an intense knowledge accumulation and formalization process. Then, under this perspective, we can infer that the formal knowledge access stage, is just a step that allows us to avoid mistakes that have been made in previous hands-on process, conducted by other agents.

We can see the whole idea if we think that there are no prototypes in real scale of ships, so that’s a process that does not allow mistakes. Then in this kind of industry, be able to access previous formalized knowledge is vital.
